Door County’s Plein Air Festival…

July 21st, 2011

Forty artists. Six days to paint. One incredible event.

If you are driving or walking around Door County between July 18-24, you will see artists painting… everywhere.   At  parks,  the marina or even in the middle of a farmers field.  What you are witnessing is Door County’s 5th annual Plein Air Festival.

Like what you see?  You get a chance to buy the artwork at the Dockside Auction on July 23rd or stop in at the Peninsula School of Art .  Thursday, July 21(that’s TODAY) the artists will be out and about in Egg Harbor… maybe someone will paint our new marina.  Now I’d buy that.

PS… Cherry season is here and will last probably into the middle of August.  Cherry pie time is here. Check our Schartner’s Farm Market in Egg Harbor.  They sell cherries and Karen makes great pies.

Random Door County stuff…

July 13th, 2011

We went to the Door Community Auditorium last night to see the Indigo Girls but not before eating at Peninsula Pub.

It was lucky duck night and I didn’t want to miss it.  What’s Lucky Duck you ask?  Well, the Pub issues a certain amount of numbers (you can only get in if there are numbers available).  Emilie and I were able to secure numbers a few months ago.  Then you put twenty bucks in before the drawing but you must be present to win.  The winnings depend on how many people show up.  If the person isn’t there half goes back in the pot and they draw another winner.  The winner this week?  None other than our gardener/landscape lady, Jerry!  YAY Jerry. PS… Thanks Kyle and Faye, the food was great.

Indigo Girls

The Indigo Girls played in front of a very enthusiastic crowd. There were a lot of locals there which was nice to see.  Why I only recognized about three songs, but the ladies were hugely entertaining.  Their song “Closer to Fine” nearly brought down the house as did their very last song “Galileo”.  It was a really nice night.

Door County Triathlon

The Door County Triathlon is this weekend.  Unfortunately, after tearing a tendon in my ankle and needing surgery, I am out this year.  I transferred my spot to Emilie’s friend Chrystal and  I will volunteer instead.  Not quite as fun, but I can cheer all my girls on as they pass me on the way to the finish line.  Good luck girls and to all the participants.

Something got messed up with my blog so if you would like to subscribe to my blog just enter your email at the top of the page.  PSS… I don’t share the email addresses.  Thanks…

PSSS- I am known to make spelling errors but I made two in the title before I reread it this afternoon… Damn that spell checker.

Fireworks and Parade…

July 7th, 2011

We headed to downtown Egg Harbor on July 3 for the fireworks and we certainly were not disappointed… they were phenomenal!  Tons of people, music and food.  It was great. We always stop at the Alpine for drinks after to see my friend Emily Bertschinger Pitchford and her family.

For the parade on Monday, we got our float done in record time… enough time to run down to Bruce and Gail’s at the Lull-Abi Inn for a minute to catch their live band before the parade.

This is basically how our float starts out…

Our guests get afraid, very afraid when they see this hot tub hanging out in the Egg Harbor Lodge lawn a few days before the parade.  They all say “Oh… it’s for the float!”  Got that cleared up.  Then progress begins…

This is our friend Tom… without him it would be a much bigger chore to put this gig together…

Mark made brats for us and Tom and Helen who used to stay with us (now they have a condo) came up as did Katie and Jim PionkoskiKatie and Jim own a new cheese store in Egg Harbor called Wisconsin CheeseMasters.Com on Rainbow Ridge Court at the top of the Egg Harbor hill.  Their Ba Ba Bleu Cheese… yum.

This is our granddaughter Adi.  Her big brother Jaden passed out the candy in the parade.  Remember the good old days when you could just throw it?  Not anymore.

Adi and Grammy

The parade begins with a fright…

Nellie, Joe, monster, Emilie, Sadie

For some reason we didn’t get a picture of our float in it’s entirety but check my previous blog post…  the float was pretty much the same as last year.  But hey, it’s tradition.  Mark and I rode on the bed and the girls were in the hot tub.  The signs say “Make your own fireworks at Egg Harbor Lodge”  and “Leave the kids at home!”  under the hot tub.  Now why mess with perfection?

Anyway, much fun was had by all.  Just 363 days (leap year) till next year.

American Folklore Theatre

June 16th, 2011

Last night we had the opportunity to check out the world premier of Bing! The Cherry Musical but not before we headed to Bayside to grab something to eat.  I love going to Bayside there is always someone we know in there.  I had the jambalaya and the girls had a salad and the guys all had sandwiches.  All good… as always.

It was slightly drizzly and the rain policy at AFT is pretty much unless it is raining pretty heavily the show must go on.  If it rains during the show they may take a break and resume when it lets up. Most people just put up their hoods… umbrellas not allowed.  Anyway, we loved the show and the story behind it.  Mark’s dad was a cherry grower and the musical portrayed the plight of cherry growers really  well.   There were a lot of funny lines and some really great songs.  We didn’t encounter any bugs either which was a bonus.

The musical really showed how most people feel about living in Door County… it is the greatest place on earth.

June in Door County…

June 8th, 2011

June is a great month to visit Door County. Usually our weather is great…albeit hot right now.  The weather is supposed to be great over the weekend into next week… and a bit cooler!  If you get up here don’t forget to check out Fish Creek Heritage Days which began June 4 and runs through June 12.  Lots of history here folks.

Door County is host to the annual Lighthouse Walk which makes sense since we have 10, yes 10 lighthouses located right here in DC.  It is Saturday and Sunday… check the Door County Maritime Museum‘s website for details.

Door County Lighthouse Festival

Have you ever driven over the steel bridge in downtown Sturgeon Bay?  Well, with a huge effort of citizens and musicians, many of of them famous (ever heard of Jackson Browne?… thought so), Sturgeon Bay has a huge music fest this weekend with live outdoor music near the historic bridge with most downtown pubs offering live music as well.  The Steel Bridge Songfest is a four day festival with over 100 bands and a pub crawl.  Whew!

Looking for nightlife around EH?  Head down to Mojo Rosa’s or Jersey Shore Pub (both downtown Egg Harbor) this Friday night for live music.  PS… they both are within walking distance of Egg Harbor Lodge.

There is a plethora of great restaurants, boutiques, lodging and bars in Egg Harbor.  Plus, we have great beaches and a phenomenal marina and are centrally located in Door County.  No wonder we were voted one of America’s Coolest Small Towns!

PS… Don’t forget, July 4th is almost here.  Egg Harbor has tons of festivities planned.  Oh yeah, Egg Harbor was voted “Best Fireworks” by Door County Magazine.

Learn to Sail Camp in Egg Harbor!

May 24th, 2011

Here is the scoop… The YMCA and the Village of Egg Harbor are offering a half day, week long sailing camp at the Egg Harbor Beach this summer.  Too cool.  I talked to Matt Luders, the Relationship Development Manager at the Y yesterday about the program. He told me the camp will be offered to kids been the ages of 8 through 17.  I am hoping our grandson Jaden will want to take advantage of this amazing program.  Learning to sail in our own back yard… that’s what I’m talking about!   Here is the complete story reprinted with permission from the Door County Advocate.

The Village of Egg Harbor and the Door County YMCA are pleased to announce a partnership that will bring a half-day sailing camp program this summer to the Egg Harbor Beach.

Egg Harbor Beach Park

Structured as an introduction to sailing, this program will run weekly during the mornings from July 11 through August 5 and will emphasize safety, fun and education.  Josh VanLieshout, Egg Harbor Village Administrator writes, “The Village of Egg Harbor is very excited to partner with the Y. Their leadership and expertise in developing quality programming combined with their focus around youth development make this a great fit for the community and an opportunity for some great memories to be made in Egg Harbor.”

The participants of the program will learn to sail on 14 foot X-Boats owned by the Village which were recently purchased from a sailing school in Appleton and funded in large part by private donations. The week-long program will cost YMCA members and Village residents and visitors $225 and the general public $290. Scholarships are available through the YMCA Strong Kids program.

“We are very grateful for this opportunity to use one of Door County’s beautiful settings here in Egg Harbor to enrich the lives of our kids. Not only will this be a fun and educational experience out on the water, but also a great character building experience that emphasizes all the core values of the YMCA; respect, honesty, caring and responsibility,” says Matt Luders, YMCA Relationship Development Executive.

For more information or to sign up today, please contact the Y in Fish Creek at 920.868.3660.  Space is limited.

A busy weekend…

May 10th, 2011

Wow… what a great weekend.  Saturday, we watched daughter Nellie and niece Annie Bley compete in the Door County Half Marathon.  With nearly 1500 runners (with an additional 500 who ran the 5K), Peninsula State Park hosted thousands of people on Saturday.  The race is run extremely well with runners and spectators shuttled in via the Door County Trolley or school buses from Gibraltar school from either the school or the Skyway Drive-In.  We got there early and were able to park in the park so to speak.  My ankle is still in a cast from my surgery for a torn tendon.  We brought along a non-motorized scooter that I knelt my bad leg on and pushed with my good leg.  I felt like I ran the marathon after pushing myself along miles of trails.  Annie finished 7th overall of the women.  She runs cross county for the UWGB. Not too shabby Annie!  Nellie did great too… she never walked and finished in just over two hours in addition to raising $2000 dollars for her non profit, the American Folklore Theatre!  Congrats girls!

Nellie and Annie at the Door County Marathon

We were in one of the most beautiful parks on the planet and I get the porta potties in the picture…

That evening we headed down to the Draft Haus in Sturgeon Bay.  Mark and our good friend Tom were inducted into the Door County Baseball League Hall of Fame.  No, there isn’t an actual building but there are tons of memories and stories to be shared at this event. Our whole family was there…

Our family with Mark's mom

Mark's three sister, his brother and Mom, Jean

My pal and Ephraim’s most famous resident, Scotty Weborg was there too…

The place was packed and we had a great time.  Congrats to Mark and Tom and all the inductees.

On Mother’s Day, we watched the Egg Harbor Indians beat Washington Island.  It was sunny, my family was there and our baseball park now has indoor plumbing… aka a bathroom, so it was a good day.  Family and friends came over for fried chicken afterward and all was good with the world.

Happy Belated Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.

The “other” Lodge…

May 9th, 2011

Reprinted with permission from the Door County Advocate.

By Warren Blum

Mike and Carrie Mesic

As close to 2,000 runners crossed the finish line at the Door County Half Marathon two years ago, Mike Mesic read their names, hometowns and times over the public address system — all of them.

“The chip (the microchip carried by each participant) keeps track of that information, and we have it as soon as they cross the finish line,” said Mesic, co-owner of WLGE-FM, more familiarly known as 106.9 The Lodge.

When the tableau is repeated today at Peninsula State Park, The Lodge will be there again with a series of live remote broadcasts, but Mesic plans to turn the announcements for individual runners over to other volunteers.

“That’s a lot of names,” he said with a laugh. “I could hardly talk when it was over.”

The Lodge is again one of the major sponsors of the race, reflecting the Mesics’ desire that they serve the community with their radio station, which signed on for the first time on April 26, 2008, and recently celebrated its third anniversary.

The Mesics are an increasingly rare commodity in this age of corporate consolidation in the media — “mom and pop” owners who started an independent radio station devoted to serving its community, including programming the music selection at the local level.

Mike, a veteran of the radio industry in Milwaukee and other cities, based the station’s unique sound on outlets in Minneapolis and Chicago that provide a mix unique to Wisconsin.

“It’s a singer-songwriter based format spanning the 1970s to now,” he said. “The industry calls it AAA, adult album alternative, but I don’t think that describes it very well.”

“If you don’t understand, just listen for a while, you’ll get it,” Carrie said.

“World-Class Rock for a World-Class County” is the musical tagline, and Mike spends a long time each day working on the music log to ensure that the songs flow together. He even changes the songs themselves to fit the season — you’re more likely to hear Bob Marley or Jimmy Buffett on a sunny summer day than during a snowstorm, for example.

From humble beginnings the Mesics have brought together a staff of 12 that includes advertising representatives and announcers. The on-air staff includes Mike from 6 a.m. to noon, Chris “The Freezer” Friese from noon to 6 p.m. followed by Amy Foxx to midnight.

Listeners have responded to the local effort and the eclectic sound.

“I’ve never seen anything like the passion people have for our station,” he said.

While Mike handles the on-air sound as program and operations manager, Carrie takes care of the business end and is the more visible face of The Lodge, active in local service organizations.

Opening a studio and office in downtown Sturgeon Bay in December has helped raise awareness of The Lodge, which is licensed to Baileys Harbor and has its main office and studio at 10311 Water St. in Ephraim.

The facility at 211 N. Third Ave. provides office space for the station’s marketing consultants and a studio that mirrors the capabilities of the Ephraim site.

“We were surprised at how some people just considered us a Northern Door Radio station,” Carrie said. The 6,000-watt signal reaches into Kewaunee County and across the bay to Oconto, Marinette and Menominee (Mich.) counties.

And where that signal can’t reach, Internet technology can: web streaming at www.fm1069thelodge.com and a new smartphone app allow listeners to carry The Lodge far beyond the county line.

“As long as I have cell service, I can get in the car and listen all the way to my mom’s in Phoenix,” Mike said. “The way we promote it is, ‘Whenever you need a little piece of Door County …’”
