Door County Half Marathon…

Monday, May 7th, 2012

This past Saturday, our daughter Nellie and her friend Rob Geitner (whose family owns Mr. G’s Logan Creek Grille) ran in the Door County Half Marathon. So, Nellie, Robert, my niece Annie and my friend Mary Geitner all headed up to the park at about 8:30.  We parked in the American Folklore Theatre Parking Lot.  The half marathon started at 10 with the Nicolet 5K at 10:30.  There were thousands of people there many of them hanging out in the big tent 106.9 The Lodge was announcing from. The race is well organized and the weather cooperated and the skies turned blue just before the race began.  This was Nellie’s second half marathon…

Robert finished with a seriously decent time of 1:36…

Funny how some people like short shorts and others like long shorts… isn’t it? They both agree on black socks however.

Also running the race was Karen Peterson from Maxwell’s House, Polly Helm from Door County Nature Works and Gerald Rex from Main Street Market.  We really saw a lot of people we knew and it made for a really great day, but it didn’t end at the park. After my athletes showered at my niece Kate’s house, we had lunch at Husby’s.  We saw Jeff and Sally Pfeifer (Thomas/Pfeiffer Insurance) and Fred and Debbie Anderson (The Ashbrooke). Sally was kind enough to give me one of her cow bells for next year’s race.  Thank goodness because I just about had my hands clapped off.  Outside at Husby’s Garage we got a table and watched the band The Nicks play.

The weather was beautiful too.  We sat with Mike and Carrie Mesic from 106.9 The Lodge who were major sponsors of the race. I also ran into long time pal Dick Burress who just retired after being The Door County Emergency Services Director for years. This is Dickie and me with Mike Mesic.

That’s the Sister Bay Bowl behind me with all new siding and a nice porch.  It looks great.  My niece Kate Hastings tends bar there on weekends.

It was a really great day.  Thanks go out to the runners, the sponsors and all the volunteers that make the Door County Half Marathon so successful.  See you there next year!

Door County Happenings…

Friday, May 4th, 2012

The season is finally here… most businesses and restaurants are open for business and waiting for visitors to arrive.  Egg Harbor boasts new welcome signs on the north and south ends of the village.  Here is Larry Desotelle who works for the Village of Egg Harbor, putting the finishing touches on one of the signs…

Polly and Don Helm have expanded Design Works, a division of Door County Nature Works. They were previously operating out of the back half of the Bay Wear building.  They will now occupy the entire building as Bay Wear has moved. They have even given the front of the building a makeover. Don and his dad are pretty well dressed painters if you ask me. Even with paint on their shirts, they look good…

Polly and Don are waiting for a new awning to bring the new look together. Nice. Design Works offers everything from carpet, tile, hardware and bedding to  furniture, an interior design. You name it they have it. They even have a commercial line for hotels and such. This is Polly in her new digs…

Check out both places… they have tons of really beautiful things and will help with any decorating needs.

Joe Smith, the manager at Shipwrecked Brew Pub has started a new venture…HOT DOGS!  Across the street from Shipwrecked in the yellow building is Fat Louie’s Olive Oil shop.  In the back you will find Joe and Megan making hot dogs, serving up soft serve ice cream and so much more…

I had a Junk Yard Dog today… yum.  Here is the menu… if you can read it.

Bruce Hill from the Lull-Abi was there too and he ordered a walking taco which looked to be an open bag of Frito’s, taco meat, cheese and sour cream.  It looked delicious!  All of the items will be great picnic fare for Harbor View Park located directly across the street.  Good Luck Joe!

The cherry blossoms and trillium are blooming as we speak.  The Door County Half Marathon takes place tomorrow at Peninsula State Park.  Our Nellie is running so Eric and I are heading over there with her to watch.  After that, Husby’s Food and Spirits will host live music (THE NICK’S!) and serve food outside at their Garage Bar.  I am sure my gang will be heading up that way. At 7pm the alt-rock band Cracker plays at the Door Community Auditorium.  The Sister Bay Bowl has classic rock band Bacchus Lotus beginning at 9:30 pm Saturday night.

Not for you, check out the Ship Yard Tours in Sturgeon Bay.  I would like to go since Mark works at Bay Shipbuilding who is part of the tour but it always falls on the marathon weekend…damn.

So much to do, so little time.  Lots more to come… stay tuned.

Learn to Sail Camp in Egg Harbor!

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Here is the scoop… The YMCA and the Village of Egg Harbor are offering a half day, week long sailing camp at the Egg Harbor Beach this summer.  Too cool.  I talked to Matt Luders, the Relationship Development Manager at the Y yesterday about the program. He told me the camp will be offered to kids been the ages of 8 through 17.  I am hoping our grandson Jaden will want to take advantage of this amazing program.  Learning to sail in our own back yard… that’s what I’m talking about!   Here is the complete story reprinted with permission from the Door County Advocate.

The Village of Egg Harbor and the Door County YMCA are pleased to announce a partnership that will bring a half-day sailing camp program this summer to the Egg Harbor Beach.

Egg Harbor Beach Park

Structured as an introduction to sailing, this program will run weekly during the mornings from July 11 through August 5 and will emphasize safety, fun and education.  Josh VanLieshout, Egg Harbor Village Administrator writes, “The Village of Egg Harbor is very excited to partner with the Y. Their leadership and expertise in developing quality programming combined with their focus around youth development make this a great fit for the community and an opportunity for some great memories to be made in Egg Harbor.”

The participants of the program will learn to sail on 14 foot X-Boats owned by the Village which were recently purchased from a sailing school in Appleton and funded in large part by private donations. The week-long program will cost YMCA members and Village residents and visitors $225 and the general public $290. Scholarships are available through the YMCA Strong Kids program.

“We are very grateful for this opportunity to use one of Door County’s beautiful settings here in Egg Harbor to enrich the lives of our kids. Not only will this be a fun and educational experience out on the water, but also a great character building experience that emphasizes all the core values of the YMCA; respect, honesty, caring and responsibility,” says Matt Luders, YMCA Relationship Development Executive.

For more information or to sign up today, please contact the Y in Fish Creek at 920.868.3660.  Space is limited.

YMCA Blossom Run…

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

The Y’s Blossom Run was held on Saturday at the Egg Harbor Marina.  Runners ran either a 5 mile, 2 mile or 1 mile youth fun run.  There was a decent turnout and even though it was a bit windy, the sun broke out of the clouds from time to time.  Nellie and her friend Eric placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in their age group. Nellie’s only goal was to beat Eric…  I didn’t realize she had such a competitive edge. Congrats to both! No running for me, after surgery to repair a torn tendon I am out of commission for awhile.  The Door County Triathlon is out for me too… damn.

We ran into JR and Nell Jarosh of Edgewood Orchard Gallery.  Like Egg Harbor Lodge, the gallery will open for the season next weekend.  JR ran the 5k with his 4 1/2  year old twins in tow…

JR Jarosh and his twin girls

Afterward, we headed up to Ephraim to eat a breakfast burrito at Good Eggs.  Saturday was their first day open for the season and the place was filled with locals.  The breakfast burritos (or omelet wrap if you prefer… same thing) are made to order and are to die for.  They also have some bakery items, and smoothies, coffee, OJ, milk etc.  Normally, I would split a burrito because they are so large but all of us were starving so we each ordered our own.  Located in  a cottage near the corner of Brookside Lane and Hwy. 42 (next to the Confectionery) on the south end of Ephraim, Good Eggs is a not to miss breakfast spot.  The owners are nice, food delish and in the summer they are also open for lunch and offer their  “Grilled Cheese Project”  Pick your bread,  cheese etc.  YUM…  This cabana is not fancy, it isn’t especially speedy and their isn’t a lot of room to sit down.  This is a breakfast wrap at it’s best… period.  Get it to go and head to the park, the beach or your balcony at Egg Harbor Lodge, it’s that good.

Door County Runner… Annie Bley!

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

This article is about our niece Annie.  She is a sweet kid and is one of our summer housekeepers at Egg Harbor Lodge.

Door County Runner Profile: Annie Bley

Annie Bley

Sevastopol grad goes the distance at UW – Green Bay

February 08, 2011
Door County undoubtedly offers a remarkable variety of outdoor activities and, in turn, is a community that embraces living an active and healthy lifestyle. Whether it’s through local running clubs, spin classes, kayak tours, family snowshoe outings or guided hikes, there is no shortage of ways to take advantage of this beautiful, natural playground.

Annie Bley, a 20-year-old Egg Harbor resident, finished 5th among women in last year’s Door County Half Marathon, where she set a personal record of 1:36:09. Now a junior at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay majoring in human biology, Bley is a member of the cross-country team. She sprinkles in several Door County area runs into her training, like the Fish Creek Hairpin Run, the Maifest Run, and for the last two years, the Door County Sprint Triathlon. Our Laura Goetzke caught up with her to talk about running, training, and how living a healthy lifestyle is about more than exercise and diet.

When did you first become interested in running?
Annie Bley
I have always been active, but it wasn’t until my freshman year of high school track that I became serious about running. My coach encouraged me to go out for track, and it’s been an essential in my life ever since. He always pushed me to do my best and definitely commit to my passion for running.

What motivates you the most to get out there and run…..and keep running?

I try to motivate myself with long-term goals. Signing up for races always keeps me going, but a big factor is also training with fellow runners.

What is a typical week like for you while training?
Right now, it varies but I run six days a week. I usually have one long run a week. I’m not a super high-mileage person but I like to stay efficient and throw in a short fast run.

What is your advice for those just starting out in the sport or training for their first half marathon?

Running with a group of people is a big motivator and helps me stay motivated. Talk with other people and go to group runs; it’s kind of like a confidence booster. Relax, run your race, and you’ll know in your heart that you did your best. Even if running isn’t your favorite, find some cross training that you are passionate about when you’re not putting in a lot of miles.

What is the best running advice you’ve received?

Simply stated, I’ve always been told to run my race and do my best. Although, there is something that always sticks out in my mind. My former high school teammate would always tell me “Just run.” It sounds silly but sometimes the simplest thing could calm my nerves.

Besides staying physically active, how else do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?

A healthy lifestyle is more than just exercise and good nutrition. I think it’s being involved and helping other people. My parents are always doing things for other people and they always stress teamwork, and that has helped me a great deal. Taking time out of your day for someone else is humbling. Also, I love my family more than anything. They keep me healthy and grounded when all else fails. My family, friends, faith, and community are my healthy lifestyle.

Fitness/Running Goals: Run a marathon next year and finish my running career at Green Bay with my best season.

Personal Record: 1:36:09 in the Door County Half Marathon last year (hopefully I can break that this year!)

Favorite Courses: Anything in Door County, of course. I love living here and having the opportunity to be a part of the atmosphere. The Hairpin on the 4th of July is a favorite because it’s short, fast, and my dad and I have made a tradition of going together every year. Another favorite is the Door County Half Marathon; it’s challenging and attracts a wide variety of runners. Also, it’s spring at Peninsula State Park and definitely a beautiful sight to see!

Check out my video of Annie in the 2009 Door County Triathlon in my July 2009 blog archive.
