After three years of planning, many hours of crunching numbers and two referendums, the Village of Egg Harbor will begin work on a brand new marina. The 6.5 million dollar marina will be a huge asset for Egg Harbor. My parents had a boat and a slip in the 70’s but then they sold the boat. Even though we didn’t have a boat we continued to use the marina. For a few years, my sister docked her huge boat there for a week and Mark and I and the kids would pretend we were on vacation. Many times we picnicked down there and our kids fished down there countless times so we are pretty excited about the new facility. I videoed the old marina and photos of the new…

Egg Harbor’s New Marina
Friday, August 14th, 2009Door County Grocery
Friday, May 29th, 2009Our friends, the Callsens and the Northrops own Main Street Market a full service grocery store in downtown Egg Harbor. They built the original store in 1987 and added on to it just a few years later. They have a huge selection and knowledge of wine… (right now get 10% off a case during their famous wine sale). Their meat department has the best steaks, pork chops, lamb chops- you name it. I don’t think you can find a tastier selection anywhere… and their butchers are pretty cool too. Many times our guests will buy a couple steaks, a few gourmet hors d’oeuvres, a bottle of wine and come back to Egg Harbor Lodge and throw the steaks on the grill and have dinner at “home”… that way they don’t miss the sunset.
I took this picture of the owners at our business association dinner a couple of weeks ago…

Vonnie and Dave Callsen and daughter Kaaren and husband Steve Northrop
At least one of the Callsens or Northrops or most of the time, ALL of the family is in the grocery store working. They will also try to special order items. Last year, I had Kaaren look for this “secret” ingredient Mark’s mom uses in her venison stew and of course Kaaren was able to get it for me. I got a case of the “flavor booster” as it is called so I should be set for awhile.
They have an an equally nice deli department with imported cheeses, hand sliced meats, salads, subs and a lunch special every day. There is a counter and stools next to their bakery so you can get a pastry and coffee and read the paper.
I think one of the nicest things about Main Street Market is their customer service… there is no equal AND they carry out your groceries. Yes, you heard it right, they carry your groceries out to your car. This was huge for me when my four kids were young. The store is the main hub of the village… it is where we get the latest news and visit with our friends particularly in the winter when I head to the store nearly every day just to see civilization.
I for one am glad they moved to Egg Harbor twenty two years ago… they give to back to our community through charities and donate to many of the arts and festivals in Door County. We also count them as some of our best friends… lucky us.
Egg Harbor’s new walking trail
Friday, February 20th, 2009Egg Harbor purchased a piece of property adjacent to our public beach a year or so ago. It made the beach much wider and nicer. An old cottage was razed and now we have more room for picnic tables, bodies lying in the sun and Frisbee. The Village of Egg Harbor decided to make a walking trail from Shipwrecked to the beach since pedestrians use to walk the narrow road with the cars and bikes to get to the beach. Apparently, this will be done without sacrificing any trees which is nice. Our larger beach is a boon to our little Door County village. I believe it’s time for everyone to get back to basics and hanging out at the beach and having a picnic is a good way to start. Bring a football and play a little catch or stop there in the evening with some snacks and watch the sunset. Kids don’t need water parks all the time… they probably prefer just a little one on one with mom and dad. My kids learned to swim at the beach with just little old me as the teacher- cold water and all. While they probably can’t swim the English Channel they are plenty good enough to at least swim off the dock or a boat. The girls and I swam in the Door County Triathlon the last three years.
Last year we were able to launch our kayak at the beach off the old boat launch that’s down there. Before that Emily and Cindy from the Alpine used to let us use their boat launch. Don’t forget we have three kayaks at Egg Harbor Lodge that are no charge to our guests. I for one am a huge beach fan and the walking trail will make the jaunt to the beach much safer for everyone.
