Mike’s Port Pub in Door County

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Mark had a game last night, so Joe, his friend Betsy and I headed over to Mike’s Port Pub in Jacksonport to grab something to eat.  Mark’s sister Barbie and her husband Mike Lautenbach own and operate the pub.  All four of their kids have worked at the restaurant over the years so like Egg Harbor Lodge it is truly a family operation.  For a smaller restaurant, they have a relatively large menu with everything from chicken tenders to steak.  I had the small sirloin steak with broasted potatoes and it rivaled any steak I have eaten at a steak house.  Joe of course favors the burgers, and we all had the chicken dumpling soup.  My entree was a special and the soup was included.  Barbie’s chicken dumpling soup is the best I have ever eaten… including my own which is really good.  Mike’s has a huge local following so it is a pretty bustling place on Friday nights.  Had Mark been with us he would have certainly had the perch which is always good.  Barbie and Mike have recently added outdoor seating with picnic tables and a covered area.

Here we are after our dinner… I always have my camera!

Mike’s dad and uncle owned Casey’s Inn in Egg Harbor for years… Mike’s grandfather was Casey and Barbie and Mike named their eldest Casey as well.  Mark and Barbie’s parents owned what is now Mojo Rosa’s in Egg Harbor which was called Jean and Bob’s Midtown Tap and they lived above the tavern.  So both Barbie and Mike come from families “in the business”.  When I started dating Mark, his parents had the bar and on Sundays in the summer after the Egg Harbor baseball games (which Mark played and coached) EVERYONE went to the Midtown Tap.  Now those were the days… we just had a blast.  After the Egg Harbor New Year’s Day Parade, Mark’s mom would make a venison stew and homemade bread for the crowd… no charge of course.

Mark’s Legion Baseball team won one game and lost the other.  Joe is too old to play this year but Mark has a great group of guys playing.  They boys are between the ages of  16-19.  Best of luck Northern Door Chiefs!

Door County weather for Saturday, June 19… Sunny and 75 degrees!  I am heading up to Ellison Bay to spend the night with my BFF Nancy at her cabin.  We are going to one of my favorite restaurants tonight to eat too… JJ’s!  What a perfect way to spend a weekend.  Lucky me!

Door County in the News…

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

I thought I would share some interesting info about Door County that I received in a newsletter from the Door County Visitor Bureau

A Door County restaurant, the White Gull Inn, is one of four national finalists in a Good Morning America Weekend (ABC) contest for the Best Breakfast in America.  According to correspondent Marysol Castro, each restaurant will be featured in a video segment during Good Morning America Weekend’s Saturday May 15th show, with on-line voting for the best breakfast that same day until late afternoon on ABC’s web site. The winner will be announced on Sunday morning May 16th along with a live interview from the winning restaurant. Let’s all vote for the White Gull Inn on Saturday May 15th and help get Door County some fabulous national media exposure!

Speaking of contests, Egg Harbor is in the running for BudgetTravel.com’s Coolest Small Town contest. Voting is open until this Sunday May 9, so visit BudgetTravel.com and vote for Egg Harbor today!

Pretty cool stuff!  Let’s all take time and vote!

Weekend Happenings!

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

May is almost here and there is no shortage of things to do in Door County this weekend.  Friday night is Open Mic night with host Mark Raddatz at Mojo Rosa’s in Egg Harbor.  Don’t stay up too late, the Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5K is Saturday at Peninsula State Park beginning at 10 a.m.  This is one of the most popular and beautiful runs in Door County.  Also Saturday is the  18th Annual Shipyard Tour of Sturgeon Bay’s three shipyards, Bay Ship, Palmer Johnson (they built Tiger Woods a yacht!) and Great Lakes Yacht Services.

Bay Ship Sturgeon Bay Door County Wisconsin

Our longtime friend Jim Brauer who is a foreman at Bay Ship sent me this photo, shot this past winter at the yard… if I weren’t going to a wedding I would totally check out this event as Mark works here when  isn’t laid off.  Thank goodness he is laid off now so he can help us get the resort open for the season!!!

Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, Gibraltar High School will perform “Suessical the Musical” the musical version of Suess’s most famous and well loved stories.  Check out the newly remodeled Liberty Square in Egg Harbor on Saturday for food and drink from 4-7 for the Door County Humane Society’s annual meeting and “Be Kind to Animals Kick Off” week.  From 8-10, check out the Landmark Resort’s Carrington Pub and listen to the music of O2M Blues/Classic Rock… free of charge, except for cocktails of course.

On Sunday, the Door County YMCA will host Dining Around the Door… kind of a “Taste of Door County” so to speak.  Nearly every Egg Harbor restaurant and many other restaurants around Door County will be featuring tasty bites of their restaurant’s signature dishes so this event will really be a DO NOT MISS.  It will be held at Gordon Lodge in Baileys Harbor which has a first rate banquet facility.  Speaking of Egg Harbor restaurants,  Regan and Matthew have chosen to go with the “Non Smoking”  before the July 5 deadline at their Casey’s Smokehouse Restaurant in Egg Harbor.   They closed for a few days for a deep clean and when we checked it out on Sunday, not only was the food delish, but the place smelled and looked fantastic.  Not that Casey’s was that smokey before, but for non-smokers any smoke is smokey… right?

The most important function we Sawyers are attending this weekend is the wedding of our niece Leila on Saturday.  She is the daughter of Mike and Barbie (Mark’s sister) Lautenbach who own and operate Mike’s Port Pub and the Innlet Motel in Jacksonport.  The nuptials begin at 1:30 Saturday at St. John the Baptist in downtown Egg Harbor.   We will be at John Henry’s by 2:30 then to Mike’s for snacks before we head to the reception.  Best wishes and much love Leila and Greg!

I am sure I missed some other events but this is the scoop on the main ones.  Come to Door County this weekend and enjoy the slower pace and Spring weather.  This is the earliest I remember seeing the trees bud out.  The Trillium are popping up but not blooming just yet.  Happy Spring!

“Living with Amy” in Door County…

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

My newest BFF Amy Hanten, of WLUK Fox 11’s “Living with Amy”, stayed at Egg Harbor Lodge last night with her adorable daughter Ireland, her producer Jocelyn and camera man Don.  They had dinner Thursday night at Pasta Vino (they were all impressed) located in the Country Walk Shops in Sister Bay. This morning, the crew headed up to Good Eggs in Ephraim to check out their breakfast burritos… they all agreed they were excellent.  They returned to Egg Harbor to check out Main Street Market and Door County Nature Works owned by our good friends Kaaren and Steve Northrop and Polly and Don Helm respectively.  At noon they came back to Egg Harbor Lodge and interviewed Mark and me.  We also did a segment on our hot cider that we make in the fall for our guests.  The weather was really nice which I was really excited about.  After they left our place they headed up to Seaquist Orchard.  I am not sure just yet when the Door County show will air… I will keep you posted.  I will get a copy and post it on my website. It was nice to get little Egg Harbor some press!

Last March, I was fortunate to get the opportunity to be on the “Living with Amy” show (it was LIVE!!) and cook with her.  We had a blast… she said she wanted to have me on again.  I hope so, it was one of the highlights of the spring for me and I have tons of good fall recipes, maybe she would like my Coq Au Vin!  Yeah, that sounds good, think I’ll make it this week.

Door County Trolley

Door County Trolley

One of the newest, cool things to do in Door County is to take the Door County TrolleyThe Door County Trolley has a number of different tours including the Lighthouse Tour, The Premier Wine Tour, The Scenic Tour and even a Ghost Tour.   One of the Ghost Tours is a tour of haunted Door County Bars (must be 21 or older obviously) which is really popular in the fall.  In the winter (January through May) they offer a Progressive Dinner Tour which includes dinner at The Inn at Kristofer’s and two other surprise locations for cocktails/hors d’ oevres and dessert.  We are definitely getting a group together this winter to check out this tour… it sounds like fun.

Our guests love the Trolley… I think most of them choose the Winery Tour or the Scenic Tour which takes them  around the county and through the park.  The main pick up area is in Fish Creek at Orchard County Winery which is only a few miles up the road.

Next time you are in the county and are looking for something new and fun to do, check out the Door County Trolley… you won’t be sorry.
