Twitter Bird

For those of you who aren’t familiar, Twitter is a micro blog… kind of an instant messaging site with a twist.  Anything you write must be done in 140 characters or less- spaces and punctuation included.  You are supposed to answer the question… What are you doing? It is actually easier than blogging as it takes less time but in order to get followers you need to write snippets of info that are interesting or link to something that is.  I have been having a bit of trouble with linking and re-tweeting (that’s copying someon else’s  tweets which is encouraged) but I am sure I’ll get into it sooner or later.  Stephen Kastner from DoorCountyStyle.com and DoorCountyChefs.com has been hooking me up with helpful Twitter links to help me familiarize myself with the process.  I think it will be fun once I get it figured out as I will be able to Tweet (that is what it’s called when you actually write something) from my Blackberry which should be pretty cool once summer hits and we are out and about a lot more. My mission is not to bore people but give out info about Door County and Egg Harbor Lodge that maybe interesting to my followers… we’ll see.

JJ’s/La Puerta

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Door County has tons of great restaurants but one of my favorites is JJ’s in Sister Bay.  We went to Chief’s wake last night- (it was a nice tribute to the long time Gibraltar baseball coach) and decided to grab a bite to eat at  JJ’s/La Puerta in Sister Bay.

This is Dave the bartender… he’s a decent bartender and easy on the eyes which is always nice…

Dave the Bartender

Dave seemed to know everyone that came into the restaurant… everyone but us, I guess.  It seems like every time we go to JJ’s we see everyone and their brother and it was no different last night…there were tons of people we knew there.

JJ’s/LaPuerta is really two restaurants in one hence the slash in the name.  There is an American menu which consists of perch, whitefish, wings, burgers- typical American fare.  They also have specials  every night… last night it was liver and onions and Mark actually ordered it. He said it was good… who knew.

The Mexican menu is right up my alley.  The salsa- they serve hot and mild, is homemade and delish.  Last night I ordered the Wild Tostada which was huge and really good.  Usually, I order the Double Taco Two which is a hard shell taco wrapped in a soft shell with refried beans… yum! They also offer Mexican combination plates with a choice of three items.  But what I like the most is the guacamole (which I did not order last night… not sure why). I LOVE their guac. But my very most favorite (I love to use improper English) are the Margaritas! Theirs are the best.

I don’t believe I have ever been to JJ’s without seeing the real JJ- the owner of the restaurant in and about the place.  A sign of a great restaurant or business for that matter is when you actually see the owner working at their own establishment.  Restaurants just seem to run better when the owner is at the helm.

The Waterfront Restaurant right next door is also owned by JJ and his family and is much fancier and has a great view of the water.  Even though The Waterfront is considered fine dining, it is not uncommon to see casually dressed boaters dining alongside customers dressed up for dinner.  That is the beauty of Door County… it is mostly a casual place to be. The Waterfront in my opinion is one of the nicest restaurants in Door County and while we don’t dine there often, it is a nice treat when we do.  They also offer Osso Bucco which is one of my favorite meals.

JJ’s is just a fun, casual place to go- my favorite kind of place and when we want to go out for a special dinner, the Waterfront is one of my favs.

My pals… Barb & Gregg Luhring

3WDesign Group

  Growing client websites since 1995

Barbara and Gregg Luhring are the owners of 3W Design Group right here in Door County.  I took it to heart when someone told me good business owners are those who surround themselves with people smarter than they are.  This is where Barb and Gregg come in… they are my go-to people when it comes to anything regarding my website, advertising, my blog, etc., etc.  I have always known the web was the wave of the future, but I must be more left-brained (or is it right-brained?) when it comes to web technology.  It doesn’t really matter because these two can do it all for me and in layman’s terms.  Barb talked me into blogging early last spring.  While I always liked to write, I really didn’t think I wrote well enough to submit anything to the newspaper, but blogging is right up my alley because it is MY website. She recently set me up to Twitter, so soon people will be able to follow my Tweets from my website.

The Peninsula Pulse wrote a nice article about Barb, check it out at PeninsulaPulse.com

Not only do they know their stuff, but they are fun to be around… Barb is one of the smartest chicks I know and she has a great sense of humor. Check out their company at 3Wdesign.com.  I am glad I did.

Swans in Door County

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

It seems like everyone else has seen the swans around Door County but me. Usually they are near the shore in Baileys Harbor and they have also been spotted on Lake Michigan near Glidden Drive.  Until yesterday, I had not seen them but late yesterday morning we were outside and we heard this loud noise… it almost sounded like coyotes but we looked up in the sky and spotted a flock of beautiful white birds in the sunshine.  They were probably around three dozen swans flying overhead toward Green Bay waters.  I would have loved to have seen where they landed.

Joe announced today that he heard the wild turkeys gobbling early this morning.  With the gobbling starting, we know it is the beginning of the breeding season.  The hens will soon start to look for a depression on the ground where they will lay an egg a day for 10-12 days. There are tons of wild turkeys in Door County so there is actually a turkey hunt that begins the middle of April and lasts until the end of May. Hunters are chosen lottery style and have a specific five-day period in which to hunt. My uncle from Highland Park, Illinois came for the Door County hunt last year and plans to do the same this year.  We have quite the time when he is here as he is hunter extraordinaire. He is on his way home from a hunting trip in Argentina and we can’t wait to hear the stories.

Yum… Subs!

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

My new favorite place for a great sub sandwich is in the Mobil Station in Sister Bay (again, no website… people you need a website).  Yes, that’s right, good food in a gas station. Sub Express and Pizza Prima! are located in Sister Bay in front of the new Pamida store (the former Krist’s grocery store).  The gas station/restaurant is really clean and there are either tables or a high bar table located by the big front window with stools to sit if you decide to dine in which is what we did. Pick up a menu slip fill out everything you would like on your sub and hand it to the sub-maker.  I love Subway but this is way better.  I haven’t tried their homemade pizza but everyone says it is also very good.  In addition to subs and pizza they also do fried baskets, appetizers, chili and even some entrees.  It would be a perfect place to pick up lunch and head out for a picnic.  So if you’re hungry and tempted to buy one of those greasy hot dogs rolling around on a machine at some gas station, get your gas and lunch at the Sister Bay Mobil instead… you won’t be disappointed.
