She’s arrived!  At 2:16 p.m. February 27 Carissa and Josh had a baby girl…Adison Jean weighing in at a whopping 9.5 pounds!  She is beautiful and perfect and we thank God for our many, many blessings! Here is a photo of Josh and his family…

Josh recently adopted Jaden who turns 8 years old today.  Happy Birthday Jaden!

Sarah and her new granddaughter

Here is me with my new granddaughter…  we couldn’t be more proud- or thankful. Mark had to work yesterday and Josh and Carissa were pretty tired so we  will head to Green Bay again today so Mark can check out his new granddaughter.

Sadly, our beloved uncle, George Sawyer passed away early this morning.  Uncle George made it a point of taking care of not only his own family, but also his nieces, nephews and their families.  He was truly an amazing man and he will certainly be missed.  He spent many mornings having coffee at Egg Harbor Lodge and when I was at a really low point last summer after losing my dad, it was Uncle George who came to my rescue.  With the new baby arriving and losing Uncle George, it reminds me of a Jack Johnson song…

“If I Could”

A brand new baby was born yesterday
Just in time
Papa cried, baby cried
Said “Your tears are like mine”
I heard some words
From a friend on the phone
That didn’t sound so good
The doctor gave him two weeks to live
I’d give him more if I could
You know that I would now
If only I could
You know that I would now
If only I could

Down the middle drops one more
Grain of sand
They say that
New life makes losing life easier to understand
Words are kind
They helped ease the mind
I’ll miss my old friend
And though you gotta go
We’ll keep a piece of your soul
One goes out
One comes in
You know that I would now
If only I could
You know that I would now
If only I could

Winter in Door County

Egg Harbor Lodge entrance

It has been a pretty snowy winter but that’s the name of the game in Wisconsin in the winter. These are some pictures that I took at Egg Harbor Lodge last week.  For those of you who don’t believe Green Bay freezes over in the winter I have proof…

The grounds look pretty different in the winter without all the flowers or the water view for that matter.  No wonder we close in the winter.

These are a few pictures I took of downtown Egg Harbor on Saturday.

Tony Shaloub in Door County!

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Tony Shaloub

Everybody has been buzzing about actor Tony Shaloub filming the independent film “Feed the Fish” in Door County this month. The “Monk” star, a Wisconsin native, is the producer and the film’s biggest name.  The Sister Bay Village Hall has been serving as the hub for the production team.  Someone said the Top Shelf has been doing the catering for the crew.  Bob Kufrin, the Sister Bay Village Administrator  said he was an extra in the diner scene at the Viking Grill and it took hours for just a short scene.  Yesterday, the actors were supposed to do a re-enactment of the Polar Bear Plunge in Jacksonport with locals as extras, but by the time we got there it had either been cancelled or moved.  It was snowing pretty hard yesterday and the wind had blown a lot of ice chunks close to the shore so maybe that was the reason no one was there.  I guess I lost out on my five minutes of fame.  I am keeping my ears open… if there is another casting call for extras I’ll make sure I’m there on time.

The film has brought tons of money into the area and if all goes well the publicity Door County will get will be phenomenal.  Word on the street is Tony is a really nice guy and all the people working with him are friendly.  The premise of the romantic comedy is a down-on-his-luck writer from California experiencing a rebirth after coming to Door County to do the Polar Bear Plunge. After I did the plunge last year the only experience I received was a sore throat.

Supposedly, the Premier will be held in Door County in the fall.  Jeff Larsen, the marketing manager at the Landmark Resort suggested it should be held at the Skyway Drive-In in Fish Creek.  Now THAT would be cool.

FYI… Door County Snomobile trails are again open.

Egg Harbor’s new walking trail

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Egg Harbor purchased a piece of property adjacent to our public beach a year or so ago.  It made the beach much wider and nicer.  An old cottage was razed and now we have more room for picnic tables, bodies lying in the sun and Frisbee.  The Village of Egg Harbor decided to make a walking trail from Shipwrecked to the beach since pedestrians use to walk the narrow road with the cars and bikes to get to the beach.  Apparently, this will be done without sacrificing any trees which is nice.  Our larger beach is a boon to our little Door County village.  I believe it’s time for everyone to get back to basics and hanging out at the beach and having a picnic is a good way to start. Bring a football and play a little catch or stop there in the evening with some snacks and watch the sunset.  Kids don’t need water parks all the time… they probably prefer just a little one on one with mom and dad.  My kids learned to swim at the beach with just little old me as the teacher- cold water and all.  While they probably can’t swim the English Channel they are plenty good enough to at least swim off the dock or a boat. The girls and I swam in the Door County Triathlon the last three years.

Last year we were able to launch our kayak at the beach off the old boat launch that’s down there. Before that Emily and Cindy from the Alpine used to let us use their boat launch.  Don’t forget we have three kayaks at Egg Harbor Lodge that are no charge to our guests.  I for one am a huge beach fan  and the walking trail will make the jaunt to the beach much safer for everyone.

Door County Coffee and Tea

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Our youngest, Joe is a senior in high school and plays on the Sevastopol High School basketball team.  Vicki and Doug Wilson’s (who own Door County Coffee and Tea)  son Conrad also plays on the team.  I chatted with them this past Saturday at the game (we lost).

Vicki and Doug Wilson

Vicki is about the bubbliest (is that a word?)  person I know.  Her enthusiasm really shows in her business.  Mark and I met her when she first started Door County Coffee in Forestville in 1993.  She has since moved the business to a new building in Carlsville which is about 5 miles south of Egg Harbor.  Vicki’s coffee house and retail shop attract tons of customers.  They make at least 70 different kinds of coffee with specials every day.  They recently added a drive-thru window which opens every day at 6:30 a.m.  Her retail shop has really beautiful seasonal decorations along with books, greeting cards and china.  The coffee shop boasts a bakery, breakfasts and light lunches.  I have been to their high tea with some friends from the YMCA.  Since I am more of a cannibal sandwich type of girl, the tea was a whole new, but lovely experience.  I was mostly concerned I wouldn’t get enough to eat but I was wrong.  The little sandwiches and desserts were beautiful and filling.  I am not sure if I will start drinking tea as opposed to coffee, however.  It is a perfect spot for breakfast with your sweetie or with some girlfriends who want to “do lunch”.  Check it out next time you pass through Carlsville when you are in Door County.
