Door County Triathlon

Nellie, Emilie, Sarah and Mark Sawyer

The Door County Triathlon was held July 20. Approximately 1100 people participated in the event including our daughters Nellie and Emilie and yes, me. The event is run amazingly well. I had a lot of athletes stay at the lodge over the weekend and they all agreed it was one of the most well-planned events they had done. The swim was really difficult for just about everybody. In my wave, I bet 3 or 4 people were pulled out… which made me feel panicky as they were splashing and flailing all over the joint. We looked like tons of salmon swimming upstream. It was just nuts. I didn’t train nearly as much as I should have and I too had a hard time.. My time was poor, but I finished and it felt really good. Even though there was delicious food there (pulled pork sandwiches and corn on the cob), I decided to wait and grab some Mexican food at Mojo’s when we were done. This year, the shirt we got were pretty cool and you could actually wear them to work-out. Other years, they gave those heavy cotton T-shirts. Ick. Next year, I am getting a decent bike and practicing my swimming in the open water a lot more.

An Egg Harbor Evening

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

EHLMark and I and our friends Kerana and Avram checked out The Log Den on Sunday night.  Besides the fact that the restaurant is really unique, our food was excellent.  The restaurant was built by our neighbors on Division Rd., Wayne and Dianne Lautenbach and their kids, Frank, Wayne and Kim.  The logs are all hand scribed and there are huge carvings of wildlife throughout the restaurant.  The bar looks like it could seat 50 people and has a few large flat screen TVs.  There is a big fireplace in the bar area also.  Our waitress Bridget, is a local and Mark and I have known she and her husband for a number of years.  Anyway, Kerana and I loved our Chilean Sea Bass which was topped with crab, shrimp, lobster and a saffron cream sauce.  Av had had the walleye which looked really good, but he didn’t rave about it. Mark liked his salmon which surprised me because I make a prize-winning version of salmon and I’m not bragging… that’s a fact.  The food was great and we headed off to the the Peg Egan pavillion  in downtown Egg Harbor to watch the Sunday night concert.  The folk group Sons of the Never Wrong were the performers for the evening.  It probably wasn’t a group I would have planned to check out (3 part harmony… um, no thanks) but they really were delightful.  It is probably a good thing for me to do things that aren’t the norm.  Anyway, Avram liked the group so much, that it really made it worth going… It was one of the nicer evenings Mark and I have had in a long time.  Kerana and Av head back to Highland Park on Saturday, and we always hate to see them leave.

Have the “Girls Gone Wild” at Egg Harbor Lodge?  We plead the 4th!

While we didn’t get first place, we had a blast… Note to parents of young children- Do not encourage your little ankle-biters to throw water balloons at the floats.  Yes, even though we are in a hot tub, we do not want little Jimmy blasting us in the head with balloons!

Egg Harbor’s 4th of July holiday!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Around our house, July 4th is the biggest holiday next to Christmas… The parade, the fireworks, music….Egg Harbor is the place to be.  We are getting our float supplies ready.  EH fireworks are around 10:00 on the Thursday, the 3rd.  Food, beverages and music will be in the Harbor View Park beginning at 3:00.  After the fireworks, we plan on checking out Mojo Rosa’s.  Big Mouth and the Power Tool Horns will be playing at Mojo’s new outdoor beer garden.  Big Mouth is a huge favorite in DC. On Friday, Egg Harbor’s parade begins at 1:00 on Church street on the north end of Egg Harbor and ends at Chief Oshkosh. Come check out our float and enjoy the day hangin’ in the Harbor…
