Cloudy with a chance of fun…

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Oh, what to do, what to do on a cloudy and/or rainy day?  In Door County the answer is… plenty!  Oh, there the usual things, plenty of boutiques and galleries which are great, but there are other things to do too.  Why not take a turn off the main drag and search for the hidden gallery or antique shop?  Bet you haven’t been bowling in awhile… check out the Sister Bay Bowl and refresh your memory on how to keep score by hand.  Then walk across the street to Husby’s and grab a cold beer and a burger.  Got an artsy side?  Even if you don’t, at Hands On Art Studio, paint, sculpt or weld yourself a masterpiece.

Why not take a class at the Savory Spoon Cooking School in Ellison Bay?  My friend Ronald and I took a wild game cooking class that was out of this world.  And the best part? The class sits down to eat the scrumptious dishes at the end.

If the weather is making you lazy, take a day and drive through one or more of Door County’s beautiful  state parks.  Even in the rain, there is nothing like a ride through the park.

Have you ever been to the Door County  Historical Museum?  Didn’t think so.  This free museum, yes free, is truly a Door County gem.  Our friend and neighbor, Mike Orthober, created a wildlife diorama that is so life like you won’t believe it.  Mike is an award winning taxidermist and artist.

Also at the museum,  check out the Pioneer Fire Company exhibit complete with old firetrucks, an antique hearse and an old jail cell.  Pretty unusual stuff, right?

Another museum located in Sturgeon Bay, is the Door County Maritime Museum who sponsors the annual Door County Lighthouse Walk that is scheduled for June 11-13.  Inside the Maritime Museum you will find the latest exhibit “GHOSTS! Haunted Lighthouses of the Great Lakes”.  That’s right, haunted lighthouses… too cool.

Still not satisfied? How about a trolley ride?  The Door County Trolley is celebrating their 10th year and we are headed to a party tonight at The Orchard’s to celebrate the fact.  The Door County Trolley offers winery tours, lighthouse tours, scenic tours and even a ghost tour.  Apparently, Door County is haven for ghosts… who knew!  Everybody loves the trolley not only for the places it can take you but also for the trolley drivers.  They are local folks who know everything about Door County and make the trip extra fun.  Congratulations AJ, on your ten year anniversary!

So, nothing to do on a rainy day?  That’s just crazy talk!

Venison Stew…

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

We had our annual venison stew Friday night… lots of food, fun and people.  Our pal Ronnie had these crazy hunting hats made for us.  We’ll wear them not to hunt but for hunting camp each night.

Nellie, me, Ronald and EmWe are looking forward to a safe and fun hunting season.  Good Luck to all our fellow Door County hunters… note to all you people who think hunting is not a good thing.  My family has hit 7, yes 7 deer with our cars.  Luckily, no one was seriously injured.   The Department of Natural Resources are in charge of the hunt in order to “harvest” deer so they don’t starve or cross the path of too many cars.  So basically, it is a good thing even though it may seem otherwise.

2009 venison stew party held in our barnPeople (mostly guys) brought desserts, cherry bounce and even pickled eggs… my favorite.   It was a lot of fun and I think the stew turned out pretty good.  This week I will plan on menus for the nine day hunt.  I have a little kitchen set up in our barn, the boys sleep out there (that’s where I draw the line) and we eat out there and most nights other hunters come by to share stories or have a bite to eat.  All of our kids are usually here and it is really nice family time for us.  Hunting has been a really great way for me to spend time with my boys.

Grizzly Scenic Air Tour in Door County!

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

I have just done the coolest thing I have done in a really long time… we flew in a small plane over Door CountyGrizzly Scenic Air Tours were nice enough to take Nellie and I on an hour tour of the county.  The tour begins at the Ephraim Airport and they offer different tours and time increments.  We saw shipwrecks, went over Cana Island, we could see all the way to Michigan and flew up and down both Door County coastlines.  It was just amazing.  Our pilot, Dave Burke aka “Grizz-1″ was funny and confident and knew more about the county and its treasures than even I do.  It wasn’t scary at all.  He flew low enough that we could really see where we were and could recognize Egg Harbor Lodge and even our house.  We flew over Chambers Island and Peninsula State Park.  The colors are just beautiful but from the air we could see that the colors actually haven’t peaked just yet. Check out the video…

This is my newest item on my Door County must do list.  You haven’t experienced the real Door County unless you have seen it by air.  I just wish it hadn’t taken me so long.  Give them a call at 920.493.2729 you will be glad you did!

Fred & Fuzzy’s & a Zip Line in Door County?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

My BFF Nancy Anderson was here last week so we had a sleep over at her cottage in Ellison Bay. After lounging on the dock all day and doing a bit of kayaking we decided to head to Fred and Fuzzy’s for dinner. It was packed like rats but the service was good, Cherry Margaritas delish and our food yummy… oh yeah and there was a sunset. Can’t get any better than that now can you?

We also ran into David Rack who owns Door County Kayak Tours.  He gave us the lowdown on his new venture Door County Zip Line at Gravity Trails. It is pretty interesting… Watch our dinner and zip line movie…

Swans in Door County

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

It seems like everyone else has seen the swans around Door County but me. Usually they are near the shore in Baileys Harbor and they have also been spotted on Lake Michigan near Glidden Drive.  Until yesterday, I had not seen them but late yesterday morning we were outside and we heard this loud noise… it almost sounded like coyotes but we looked up in the sky and spotted a flock of beautiful white birds in the sunshine.  They were probably around three dozen swans flying overhead toward Green Bay waters.  I would have loved to have seen where they landed.

Joe announced today that he heard the wild turkeys gobbling early this morning.  With the gobbling starting, we know it is the beginning of the breeding season.  The hens will soon start to look for a depression on the ground where they will lay an egg a day for 10-12 days. There are tons of wild turkeys in Door County so there is actually a turkey hunt that begins the middle of April and lasts until the end of May. Hunters are chosen lottery style and have a specific five-day period in which to hunt. My uncle from Highland Park, Illinois came for the Door County hunt last year and plans to do the same this year.  We have quite the time when he is here as he is hunter extraordinaire. He is on his way home from a hunting trip in Argentina and we can’t wait to hear the stories.
