Door County’s other big festival is being held in Sister Bay this weekend.  We haven’t been to Fall Fest in a few years but we may take a ride this weekend.  I copied this from Sister Bay’s website.

Fall Fest – Friday through Sunday, October 17 – 19

The “Granddaddy” of all Door County festivals, 2008 will mark the 63^rd annual Fall Fest in Sister Bay.  What began as a celebration and reward for the Door County tourist workers after a busy tourist season has evolved into one of the largest weekend celebrations on the peninsula!  A parade, arts & crafts fair, food booths, live entertainment, and children’s activities make this a “must-do” weekend, but the real fun lies in one of the Fest’s oldest traditions – the famed Ping-Pong Ball Drop.  An astonishing 10,000 Ping-Pong balls are dropped from the sky on Sunday afternoon, with a one in ten chance of winning a prize from a participating Sister Bay business!

I think we had a record number of people this year… Here are a few photos I took over the weekend.

      Here is Mark and I on Sunday.  There was a lot more time to check out the vendors and listen to the music on Sunday. 

It is that time of year again… Pumpkin Patch!  Those very words alone send fear and excitement to all business owners, residents and employees alike.  The festival is really a lot of fun… good music, food, crafts, art, games- you name it but it gets really busy and the traffic is crazy.  (If you are lucky enough to stay at Egg Harbor Lodge you can walk or take a bike). The festival is run  by the Egg Harbor Business Association.  It is a huge festival run by a relatively small group of people.  We recruit everybody and anybody to help and with the lure of free food and beer we usually get enough people.  One year Mark and I decided to sell brats and beer while we were setting up on the Friday the day before the festival usually begins and Voila! the festival is now a three day event.  We have not decided if that is a good thing or not.  This year we will not be able to cook and sell brats on Friday but I am sure somebody will step forward and take over.  This weekend means all hands on deck… all of our kids help along with their friends.  It is a lot of hard work but a lot of fun and the best people watching experience one can imagine.   This year the EHBA is donating $1000.00 to a local mother with terminal cancer.  She and her husband have three children.  The  employees  from Door County Memorial Hospital will work on Saturday to earn the money and will then turn it over to the family.  There will be canisters for donations as well, so if you go to the festival, be sure to donate to this worthy cause.

At the end of each day we take all of the roasters and dishes to the Alpine… they are kind enough to wash everything up for us. We then stop and see my pal Emily Bertschinger and her family and have a couple of well deserved cocktails. 

It will be a wild weekend… see you there.  I will be the pony-tailed blonde wearing a dirty sweatshirt.

And lets not forget the beautiful fall colors we get every day.  Fall… the best time of year in Door County!

This weekend the the annual Thresheree is held in Valmy. Check out your Door County map to see where Valmy is. There will be signs once you get close. There are antique tractors, food, beer… locals love this crazy festival, including our daughters Nellie and Emilie. They were the winners of the women’s division in the pig wrestling last year. Yes, THAT is something to be proud of… I am sure they will try and defend their title on Sunday. The prize was free food and drink and the Institute Saloon (they sponsored Nell & Em’s team) and is located in Institute of course. The Saloon is known for it’s excellent pizza and budget friendly drinks. It looks like a dive bar and yes, I guess it is but Kay and Dennis who own it are really nice and like I said the pizza is excellent and cheap. It can get packed like rats in there on weekends it gets so busy. I am not a fan of getting dirty but we will head over to the Thresheree to watch our pretty dirty girls defend their title. They were thrilled when a photo of them in the mud was splashed in the Door County papers last year… me, not so much.
